We are a small group of poetry enthusiasts who meet fortnightly on Wednesday afternoons at Manvers Street Baptist Church to read and discuss poetry. We take it in turns to present one or two consecutive sessions on a particular poet or theme, so each member's turn comes around approximately once a year. New members are not expected to make a presentation until they feel confident about about doing so.
We also have Free Choice sessions when we each share one or two poems with the group.
We read poetry from all parts of the world, whether written in English or translated from other languages. We cover all poetic periods and styles from epics such as Beowulf, through the Romantics, to the twentieth and twenty first century poets including performance poets such as Benjamin Zephaniah and John Cooper Clarke.
We welcome all levels of knowledge of and interest in poetry; only a minority of our members have any professional English literature background.
