This group was formed after the Open Day in October 2016. It features both urban and rural walks, looking at aspects of interest in the historical, cultural and natural environment. We walk mainly on hard surfaces and avoid more than an occasional stile and muddy fields where possible especially those containing cows and horses. Dogs are not accepted on our walks.
Format of Walks - Basic principles
1. Start of all walks to be accessible by bus from Bath Bus Station, to begin at approximately 10:30am compatible with bus times and to take place on the 2nd Thursday of the month.
2. Max. length 4 miles, lunch in a café/pub at the end of walk while on GMT (November to March inclusive) making sure the venue caters for any dietary requirements of which members have notified the walk leaders. Picnic during BST (April to October inclusive) to incorporate a stop at a pub/café. Summer walks to be mindful of the availability of shade.
3. All walks to have 2 named leaders who can, if they wish, set a maximum for their particular walk. Each member of the group to take a turn to lead or help lead a walk and to email all the others 7 to 10 days beforehand, to include bus details and leaders' mobile numbers. If unable to attend, members to email the Walk Leader(s) by the previous evening at latest.
4. If heavy rain forecast for morning of walk, Walk Leaders may decide to cancel and to email all members by 6pm the previous evening.
5. A Back Marker, with mobile, should be used where walkers may miss the way if the group fragments. At relevant points the Front Leader should stop to allow the group to re-form. However group members should be capable of maintaining a fairly gentle pace of c. 2 miles an hour; this positions us between the faster hiking groups and the slower stroller groups which may be more suitable for those wanting a different pace.
6. Contact details on the Membership List (name, mobile no. & email): this list to be distributed to all members, and acceptance of which to be taken as implicit acceptance of data sharing between members of the group only for the purpose of managing the group for the benefit of its members.
7. All members should carry "In Case of Emergency" details.
8. At the annual planning meeting in March 2025, we agreed that, if members did not attend at least 3 walks per year (without notified extenuating circumstances), they would be removed from the membership, to allow people on the waiting list to join. We also agreed to have a deputy convenor.
Bath u3a members can contact the Group Convenor via the Enquiry link at the top of this page. Non-members should contact the Groups Advisers for more information.
